Alice Bettye Tice

October 6, 1924 - April 1, 2021

Alice Bettye Tice (known by most as “Bettye”), age 96, was born October 6, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA where she grew up with siblings, Jennie and Ellis Jr. and parents Minnie and Ellis Madler. She lived in a tight-knit neighborhood where they shared what they had and supported each other during World War II. Bettye married John Hilton Tice on August 29, 1942. After a romantic letter-writing relationship and short engagement they rode a bus to Reno, NV to marry. Bettye lost the love of her life in her early 50’s after almost 34 years of marriage. Bettye didn’t let life get her down. After John passed away, Bettye obtained her AA Degree from Olympic College and then she built a new home through the Self-Help Program, where she remained until her passing. Bettye was a pioneer for women. She had many untraditional jobs, including welding on ships, tele-typing messages during the Vietnam war, bus driving and two appearances in Hollywood movies. Her most rewarding job was raising three children, John Ellis Tice (who preceded her in death), Bettye Jean Dobson and Patrick Charles Tice. She had four grandkids, Lalaina, Jason, Kasey and Aurora and seven great grandkids. Bettye volunteered in many areas throughout her years. She was a scout leader, 4-H leader, Master Gardener, USN and USMC Relief Society volunteer and she knitted for over 300 hours, making baby items for local hospitals and hats and lap blankets for veterans. Bettye’s hobbies included knitting, sewing, painting, fishing, hunting and she was an avid reader, which inspired her kids and grandkids to become avid readers. She enjoyed spending time every Friday with the knitting group at Given’s Senior Center until she became mobility impaired. Her joy in life was spending time with family, having family dinners and sharing stories. She was able to stay in her home until she departed us, being cared for by her loving family as caregivers. We were so blessed to have “mom, grandma, great-grandma, friend, comedian and inspirer” as a part of our lives for so long. She is already truly missed! Following Bettye’s wishes, there will be no official services. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to: KC-HELP (Knights Community Hospital Equipment Lend Program)
