Darlene May Bissonnette

November 11, 1933 — July 31, 2025

Port Orchard

Mrs. Darlene May Bissonnette (née Lodge), age 91, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, in Port Orchard, Washington. Born on November 11, 1933, in Corona, California, Darlene lived a life defined by compassion, commitment, and an unwavering dedication to helping others.

From a young age, Darlene embraced the joy of movement and performance. Between the ages of 10 and 17, she pursued a career as an acrobatic ice dancer and skater—a graceful beginning that reflected her vibrant spirit and love for activity.

Her passion for service blossomed into decades of volunteerism that touched countless lives. In 1973, Darlene began volunteering with the American Red Cross. Over the years, she contributed an extraordinary 4,261 hours of service and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1981 by the Mayor of Riverside, California. Her leadership roles continued to expand when she became Hospital Chairperson at March Air Force Base in 1983 and Chairperson for the Cleft Palate Association at Loma Linda Hospital that same year.

Darlene’s commitment to community extended far beyond one organization or location. From 1984 to 1989, she served as a Girl Scout Leader, guiding young girls through lessons in leadership and teamwork. Later in life, she took on civic roles as a Volunteer Sheriff—first in Derby, Kansas from 1996 to 2004 and then in Union County, Ohio from 2006 to 2012—further demonstrating her deep-rooted sense of responsibility and care for others.

Professionally, Darlene brought warmth and attentiveness to her role as Women’s Department Manager at Walmart in Derby, Kansas from 1996 until her retirement in 2003. Her colleagues and customers valued her friendly demeanor and meticulous attention to detail.

Family was at the heart of everything Darlene did. She was a devoted mother to her children: Therese C. Bissonnette, Debra L. Bissonnette, Normand A. Bissonnette Jr., Roland E. Bissonnette, and Jeannette M. Bissonnette. She found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren—Monica K. Mankin, Brennan H. Mankin, Mary F. Mankin, Joshua L. Griego, Sarah M. Griego, Nicole M. Zahner, and Hayley M. O'Banion—and watching their families grow with great-grandchildren Emlynn L. O'Banion, Callan W. O'Banion, Adalyn M. O'Banion, Ruben I. Alvarez, Gabriel L. Alvarez, Jennessa M. Alvarez, and Trent M. Zahner; as well as great-great-grandchildren Yovanni and Alejandra. She is also survived by her brother Thomas B.Lodge.

Darlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband Normand A. Bissonnette Sr., with whom she shared many cherished years of love and partnership.

Outside of her volunteer work and family life, Darlene enjoyed simple pleasures that brought light to each day—playing bingo five nights a week among friends; reading novels that stirred her imagination; knitting cozy pieces for those she cared about; and solving puzzles that kept her mind sharp and engaged.

Always by her side was Brandi, her loyal Cavalier King Charles Spaniel companion who provided comfort and joy throughout the years.

Darlene May Bissonnette leaves behind a legacy built on tireless service and heartfelt devotion—to family members across generations, to communities spanning multiple states, and to all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her generous spirit.

May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her and serve as a lasting reminder of a life beautifully lived through kindness and purpose. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Red Cross in memory of Darlene M. Bissonnette.

A celebration of life will be held in Derby, KS at a future date
