Words that describe this life-
David Arlen Stamp was from Brookings, South Dakota where he was raised till he went into the US Navy after high school. David believed in working hard so at times he could enjoy playing. He loved to have fun with his friends and traveling. He really enjoyed eating a good meal.
Favorite stories of his life-
David loved good food. His travel stops across the country were usually dictated by his favorite places to eat. He had found some pretty good holes in the wall to eat at and it always made him happy to eat after a long day of driving.
His son Michael was visiting him in Hawaii and they were at the beach. Michael decided to get in a fight with a jellyfish and lost. David went to the store to get him something for the sting. When he returned he tossed Michael a bag of caramel popcorn. Michael was perplexed not understanding how this was going to help take out the sting. David said it probably wouldn’t help with the sting itself but it would taste good might help him feel better.
David once drove from his home in Port Orchard, WA to Yakima, WA (about a three hr one way drive) to get a hamburger from Miners Restaurant in Yakima. After eating his hamburger meal, he and his dogs got back into his truck and drove back home.
Some significant accomplishments-
David was a Master Chief in the US Navy. He was proud of this achievement as he absolutely loved the US Navy and specifically the fast attack submarine force.
As many know, David like to have a beer or two or few more at times…you get the point. David reached a point in his life though where he decided he needed to hang up his dancing shoes and do away with the drink. By the grace of God David found a program to help him. He was very involved with his chosen 12 Step program for 32 years.
Occupation- Master Chief Machinist Mate (retired) Employer- US Navy
Production Controller GS-12 (retired) Federal Government
Favorite family activities- David loved to travel cross country, abroad or even to the other side of the state. One thing you could be guaranteed, there would be a good meal involved.
Personal Activities- David enjoyed attending his 12 Step meeting and conferences. He enjoyed meeting new friends and staying in touch with old friends. You never know when he could be knocking at your door looking for a bed for the night. He could be found on Saturday mornings having breakfast with his high school or 12 Step buddies.
David enjoyed gardening and canning. He liked being to see what his hard work provided for him, his family and his friends.
Hobbies- After moving back to Brookings after his mothers passing he got into shooting firearms and working on trying to control the prairie dog population in western South Dakota. Well in a short period of time David really got into shooting and collecting firearms. This is something he loved to discuss at anytime all the way to his passing.
Favorite experience in life- Living in Hawaii…he loved Hawaii. When asked what was his “happy place” he would immediately respond Hawaii. David loved the islands. He loved all the different types of Asian foods available and many lessons that he had an opportunity to learn from.
David will be missed greatly by his family and many friends. He was always good for an adventure and lasting memories. A burial at sea will be performed onboard a US Naval vessel per his wishes.
