Obituary

James (Jim) Reiher Low, a devoted family man, proud naval veteran, and beloved neighbor, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 87 years old.

Jim was born on June 27, 1939, in Edmonton, Alberta, and was adopted as an infant by his loving parents, Mark and Vivian Low. He grew up in Franklin Park, Illinois, where he developed a passion for the outdoors, often camping with his father. His dedication and leadership shone early as he earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a teenager. He also grew up a passionate fan of the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks.

In 1957, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing Officer Candidate School, he was transferred to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, where he met the love of his life, Suzanne. Their connection was instant; they were married just three months and three days later, in May of 1967.

Jim served with honor as a Naval Aviator Navigator during the Vietnam War and retired after 20 years of service as a Lieutenant. Following his military career, Jim earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Washington (Go Dawgs!). It was not uncommon in the summer terms to find his kids sitting with him during classes. He went on to work for various telecommunications companies around the Seattle area.

He was the ultimate family man. Whether he was driving his kids and their friends to school—always making time to stop for donuts—or standing on the sidelines, Jim never missed a single school or sporting event. This included coaching his kids and sometimes refereeing soccer games. This enjoyment continued with his grandsons, as he was always at their sporting and school events, including being their honored guest at Veterans Day Celebrations. He was very engaged with his grandsons, helping them with homework and driving them to swimming lessons. He held an immense, boundless pride in the successes and milestones of his children and grandchildren.

In retirement, Jim poured his energy into the things he loved most: traveling, playing golf, and spending time with his friends and family. He was very active with the McCormick Woods Men’s Golf Club as a member and officer. In his neighborhood, Jim was a warm and familiar fixture, often walking with his dog. Well-known and deeply loved by those around him, he was always ready to pause, smile, and strike up a chat with anyone passing by.

Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne; his children, Mike (Gretta) and Lesley (Diane); his three cherished grandsons, Jonathan (Heather), Jayden, and Joshua; and his great-grandson, Jackson James.

His legacy of service, kindness, and fierce devotion to his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
