Obituary

Janet Ruth Schmalstieg beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Her life was defined by resilience, strength, and an unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Born on September 9, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Janet was the daughter of John Edward Winghart and Dolores Elizabeth Cornett Winghart. She was baptized and attended Saint Boniface School before continuing her education at Perry Traditional Academy High School. During her youth, she enjoyed sports, collecting old records, and writing to pen pals. She dreamed of traveling the world—a dream that would later shape many of her happiest adventures.

From the beginning, Janet was built with grit and a deep sense of responsibility. She dedicated her life to caring for her children and supporting others with quiet steadiness. She offered comfort without hesitation and carried herself with her version of gentle grace that brought peace to all who knew her. Her kindness was constant, her resilience profound, and her love a source of enduring strength for her family.

Janet found joy in many pursuits throughout her life. She cherished her time at the Goodwill Hill Fishing and Hunting Club, where she loved catching fish and spending time outdoors. She treasured camping trips at Conneaut Lake Park, savoring ice cream and pies while sitting around the fire. She also delighted in traveling with her partner, Iven—her “partner in crime”—sharing countless adventures, from feeling the sand beneath their feet to enjoying the finer things in life on numerous cruises. Among her most cherished memories were the quiet days spent with Iven, as well as the lively visits from Iven’s grandchildren—her “football team”—especially during the Christmas season when they gathered to make pizzelles.

Janet is survived by her three sons—Randy, Jason, and Shawn—who will forever carry forward her wisdom, humor, and spirit. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Stephanie, China, Alex, Sarah, and Tyler, each of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

Though her passing leaves a deep sense of loss, the memory of her warmth, her laughter, and her steadfast heart will continue to be a blessing to all who were touched by her life.

A celebration of life will be held, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and share the stories that defined her remarkable life.
