Joan Elizabeth Lingenfelter lived 91 years with curiosity, determination, adventure and a deep devotion to her family. She passed away on September 7, 2026, leaving behind a family who will miss her deeply and carry her memory forward.

Joan was born on March 29, 1935, in Woodstock, Illinois. A high school valedictorian, she went on to graduate from the University of Idaho and build a career in education. She taught kindergarten through third grade in the South Kitsap School District at Orchard Heights Elementary and Olalla Elementary, briefly served as a vice principal, was president of the teachers’ association, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Society for Key Women Educators. Joan took great pride in her work and in doing everything she undertook well.

On September 1, 1956, Joan married Robert “Bob” Henry Lingenfelter. Together they built a life filled with family, friendship and adventure. Joan and Bob loved hiking and climbing mountains with their group of friends, as well as canoeing and exploring new places. They traveled extensively, embracing opportunities to experience the world and make lasting memories together.

Joan was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and became a Mariners fan in 1977. She was also generous with the causes she cared about, supporting numerous organizations and causes throughout her life.

Family was at the center of Joan’s life. She treasured time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and found immense joy in being with the people she loved. Her family was one of her greatest sources of pride, and the memories they shared will remain part of her legacy.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob, who passed away on December 14, 2013, and her older brother, Kenny Thronton.

She is survived by her children, Steven (Penny) Lingenfelter, Kevin Lingenfelter, Kathy Gacek and Mark Lingenfelter; grandchildren Era, Carl, Tesia, Connor, Kylie, Elisha and Nicole; 11 great-grandchildren; and siblings Hazel Dunlap, Peggy Lagerhausen, and Judy Hansen.

Joan leaves behind a legacy of love for her entire family, friends, learning, adventure, and generosity. She taught children, explored the world, embraced new experiences and took great pride in the life she built with Bob and the family they created together.

A memorial service celebrating Joan’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on October 3, 2026, at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.
