Nicki (Azalya) Southard, formerly known as Azalya Ruth Nichols, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Born in 1936 in Egan, South Dakota, Nicki was adopted by John and Ellnora Nichols, who were hardworking farmers. Her family's journey took them to the northwest during the war, but at the war’s end the family returned home to South Dakota. After the passing of her father, Nicki and her mother moved back to Port Orchard, where they took on the responsibility of running the café at the Port Orchard Airport. It was during her high school years that she earned the affectionate nickname “Nicki,” which stayed with her throughout her life.
After graduating high school in 1954, Nicki furthered her education at Olympic College and began her career at Kitsap Bank. She was known for her attention to detail and her flair for decorating, which reflected her vibrant personality. Nicki enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including boating and entertaining, but her greatest joy was ensuring her family was well cared for. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, deeply loved by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, David Southard. Nicki is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (Dave) Herdrich and Jill Kostomay; her son, Jeff Heuer; and her stepson, Guy (Liz). She also leaves behind her dear grandchildren, Courtney, James, Jack, Jordan, Alyssa, and Heather, and her great grandsons, Jon and Ryan.
Nicki's warmth, kindness, and dedication to her family will be profoundly missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
