Tom Barrett was 80 years old when he died on October 3rd, 2025. He spent the last year hoping to beat stomach cancer. He endured chemo and many hospital stays. He passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by family.
Tom was born on May 8, 1945 in Vallejo, California. Whenever anyone asked when his birthday was, he would reply—VE Day. Tom attended Cal Paly in San Luis Obispo where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. In only three days, he went from college to being a civil servant for the Navy at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1968.
He was a husband, father, sailor, model railroader, and guitar musician. While watching his daughter and son grow up, he loved volunteering at their schools and their scouting programs. It was also at this time he got really interested in sailing. He took a few lessons, but he also said that the best way to learn was to crew on a racing sailboat.
He was transferred to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1994 and worked there until retiring in 2001. Since that first day, he knew he wanted to sail all over the Sound. He made many friends while racing and cruising on our sailboat, Emerald Lady. He also enjoyed being a certified US Sailing Judge. His other hobby was being deeply involved with the Bremerton Northern Model Railroad Club, which has a terrific layout at the Silverdale Mall.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, his daughter and son-in-law, Leanna and George Conroy, his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Eleanor Barrett. He has six beloved grandchildren, a sister Melinda Webster and a nephew, Jeff Webster. He will be missed!
We also want to thank all the nurses and doctors at the following hospitals, St. Michael, St. Michael Cancer Center, St. Anthony, and Virginia Mason in Seattle. These folks were so kind and wonderful in the excellent care that they gave Tom throughout the last year. And finally a most sincere thanks to CHI Franciscan Hospice.
In memory of Tom and the care he received, donations can be made to the St. Michael Cancer Center (VMFH.org/Foundation, type SMMC Cancer Center in Other) or’St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org/donate).
