Vernetta Young Bates, loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and beloved aunt, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025 after a long and fulfilling life at the age of 89, in Bremerton, Washington.
She was born on June 10, 1935, in Newdale, Idaho. She is joined in rest by her sweetheart David Bates and her loving son, Iain Bates along with many other loved ones throughout her life. She is survived by her daughter, Lory Shoup and husband Jeff Shoup; and her sons, John Bates, Jared Bates and wife Natalie; and Joe Bates and wife Carrie; 7 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and in December a great- great grandson.
In 1981 Vernetta and David moved the family to the Kitsap Peninsula and called Bremerton home for 45 years. Vernetta was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She enjoyed doing genealogy, crocheting, reading and listening to books. She was always up for a game of Farkle which she would inevitably win!
As a devoted homemaker, Vernetta's life revolved around her family, which she considered her proudest accomplishment. She cherished the bonds she shared with her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins who were a vital part of her life and provided a source of comfort and support. Vernetta’s family was her pride and joy. She looked forward to visits from each one and she created countless memories with them.
Her stunning smile would light up the whole room. She cared deeply for the people around her. She was so kind and passionate. She made an impact on many lives. Her legacy of kindness and familial love will continue to resonate within the hearts of those she leaves behind. Vernetta Young Bates will be dearly missed and forever remembered for her sweet spirit and her passion for family.
